THE FIRST KIWANIS CLUB IN SARAWAK IS FORMED – THE KIWANIS CLUB OF KUCHING
The Kiwanis Club of Kuching held its charter night at glittering function at the Hornbill Restaurant of the Sarawak Club of Kuching. The Deputy Works Minister , Datuk Yong Khoon Seng , was there to witness the installation of KCK’s inaugural board which was conducted by YT Soo, Lieutenant Governor of Division 1.

John Lau who is currently Toastmasters International Third Vice President is the Clubs Charter President. John learnt about Kiwanis from J. Andre Brooks, the President of the Kiwanis Club of Roanoke, Virginia. Brooks was John’s mentor and campaign manager when he ran successfully for the position of Third Vice President of Toastmasters International.
John then contacted the District officers in Malaysia and Past International Trustee Hwang Chia Sing visited John and arranged for the Kiwanis Club of Kuala Lumpur to co sponsor the club together with the Kiwanis Club of Roanoke.
KCK received its charter from Kiwanis International in April this year and was registered by the Registrar of Societies on the 29th June 2009. Present at the installation was Past International Trustee Hwang Chia Sing and District Governor 2009-2010 Doris Choo.
Other Board members are Johanna Mary Ngui (Secretary), John Huong and Chai Kheh Aun (Vice Presidents), Sylvia Ngui (Treasurer) and directors Wendy Tan, Fredia Ngui, Chan Ben Teck, Nancy Kueh, Law Lee Poh, Wenderine Koo, Ting Ping, Kua Peh Chin, Timothy Yong , Dolly Chung and Patrick Chang.
In his address John Lau envisioned the club actively serving the state and set a goal of growing the organization in Sarawak to six clubs by the end of the fiscal term.
The Club received a donation of RM 5,000 from Datuk Yong as a launching fund for the club.
