All the best: Ng (second from left) congratulating Choo for being elected president of the newly formed Kiwanis Club of Bercham. On the left is Tony Goh who is in charge of growth in the organisation while on the far right is Governor Elect (2011-2012) Teh Cheng Lian.
KIWANIS Malaysia aims to raise RM1mil to enable 50,000 underprivileged students to own a dictionary each.
Governor Ng Bee Keong said the dictionaries would be distributed to the children by its clubs nationwide under its “Going to School with Kiwanis Dictionary” project.
Ng, who was in Ipoh for the formation of the Kiwanis Club of Bercham and the election of its office bearers last week, also told reporters that Kiwanis Malaysia would be supporting the Kiwanis International-UNICEF project to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus by raising US$100,000 (about RM315,000).
The disease, he said, killed about 60,000 babies and a significant number of women each year.
“The disease causes newborn babies to suffer repeated painful convulsions and to be extremely sensitive to light and touch,” he said.
The election of office bearers saw businessman Raymond Choo being elected president, Choong Sun Onn as vice-president, Lim Keng Kiat as secretary and Lee Kok Onn as treasurer.
